Alright everyone. This is my latest animation which is an entry to Red Bull’s Canimation contest. The student prize for the stop motion category is a 1 month internship at Aardman, so pretty serious stuff. To make it into the top 10 you have to have as many views, comments, likes and shares on the Vimeo version of this as physically possible! With this animation I wanted to go back to my roots a bit and just play around with fun movements and morphs with plasticine shapes and figures. While playing around with lighting I discovered that if you place objects on a light box and rig another set of lights to shine on them from above then you get a really nice, crisp and colourful result. So I used a vertical tripod with a Cannon 450D to look down onto the light box. Then I just played around with the plasticine and animated whatever movements came into my head. This was also my first time using Dragon Stop Motion which is now my software of choice for any stop motion animation. Contact: Thatmax@mac.com

On the side of the street, a one man band attempts to busk. In his struggle he discovers that the source of the music comes from contorting his body and the music begins.
We created this animation in a team of 3 for our production studies module within the 2nd year of the BA Animation course at Bristol School of Animation (UWE). The production took about 10 weeks, allowing 2 weeks off for christmas. We gave ourselves 3 weeks for the animation and editing stage of things and spent the rest of the time developing the storyboards, puppet design, set/prop design, foley, etc.

This showreel shows some of my favourite stop motion pieces from the past few years. Some fairly old, but also some very new. It’s quite a fun little compilation and it conveys my style quite successfully with the quirky soundtrack accompanying the clips.

A quick lip sync claymation of a scene out of the classic “Wassup” Budweiser advert from 2000. Entirely shot at 25fps it took me about 2 hours to complete and while its kinda rough in places and the characters are simple I enjoyed animating it. Plus it was pretty fun using my light box as the base, it gave an eery glow and meant I didn’t have to use my huge photography lighting kit.

This piece was for my open brief prject at the Bristol School of Animation (UWE), I completed pretty much all of the animation and editing within one fairly stressful night with absolutely no sleep, but it all worked out in the end. I was basically just playing around with the lighting and shadows given by the various movements of a lamp exploring my room. I used my Nikon D70 DSLR camera to shoot this which made it a lot trickier as you recieve no live video feed from that variety of camera, however there is no way I would have been able to get a decent result from my standard mini DV camcorder in those dark conditions. This is why you shouldn’t leave your room unlocked at uni… Using around 638 beer, wine, spirit bottles and cans we filled my mates room to the brim while he was away from our halls in Bristol. It was a tough couple of days arranging and collecting various bottles and cans but we got a pretty interesting animation out of it, and the look on his face was brilliant.

This is my A-level art final exam piece, I had a total of 12 hours to make this (including editing) so its a bit rough around the edges as I barely finished it in time. However it works well with the soundtrack and some of the experimental shots which I tried out worked well. Drip is themed around the water cycle and focuses on a single water droplets journey through it. As this was created for my final art exam I tried to include various mediums into the video as my art teachers have always been a bit iffy about the idea that animation is just as much as an art form as painting, this is why the bird, the sun and the cloud are drawn.
